When do you know it’s time to end a marriage?

Sometimes the biggest struggle in a marriage is knowing when to pull the trigger and end it for good. Many times, marriages go through a state of limbo, where no direct decisions are made and the uncertainty looms in the back of one or both person’s mind. After all, the consequences for pulling the trigger and calling it quits may completely alter the lives and trajectory of your children. The end of the marriage may sink a person financially and cause all kinds of chaos with shared assets.

So, how does someone know it is the right thing to do? Here is a list of some signs that you need to fold your cards and walk away.

  • You gave it a fair chance – Have you exhausted everything within your power to make the marriage a success? You can’t call it quits without having the peace of mind knowing you have done your part to work things out. Have you been open to your partner’s opinions of yourself and made changes to support your marriage in a positive way? Give it a fair chance. Seek counseling, do your part to improve and make your home and relationship peaceful from the energy you’re contributing from your end.
  • You are financially prepared – Perhaps you are leaning more towards divorce, but are you ready to take on the financial instability that divorce may cause you? It may not be the right timing if you will be drastically affected financially right now. Make changes wisely and not flippantly being emotionally charged.
  • Your children would be better off with two divorced, yet happy parents – Not all couples who force themselves to stay married “for the kids” are really benefiting their wellbeing. Kids see past the façade and know when their parents are miserable living together. If you cannot work things out and have tried many times, and you know your kids will thrive better in a happy environment through divorce, then follow that hunch.
  • Intuition – What is your intuition telling you? Are you quieting your mind enough to listen deeply within yourself? If you are not ready to let go of what you dreamed your future would look like with this person, then sort that out first. If your intuition is telling you it is the right thing to do at the right time, then take action steps towards that outcome.

Divorce is never the end of the world. It may be the end of a relationship, but your self-worth remains through the fire of its destruction. When you have peace and are not double-minded about divorce, take strong action towards beginning the process. The road ahead will require patience and perseverance, but legal help is available to help you work out the details and jump start your new life.
